Painters painting

A few months ago on one of those perfect Tennessee October mornings... clean, warm air and sunshine, autumn colors beginning to glow...a group of amazingly talented artists put up easels,  got out paint and started working their magic along a small creek in Leipers Fork, TN. You can learn a lot from simply watching the masters as they study, simplify, compose and execute a plein air painting. The members of Plein Air Painters of the SouthEast were so open, warm, and friendly; it was a privilege and pleasure to spend a few hours absorbing their knowledge and talent.

I hope to push myself this year to get out and paint from life. It demands both concentration and courage: concentration to focus on the scene, remember to simplify the shapes, make good value and color choices, use deliberate brushstrokes; courage to brave the weather and critters (i.e. chiggers & ticks), the curious (judgmental?) bystanders, and my own fear of failure. 

These wonderful and talented artists in the photos were so kind, so encouraging, giving a consistent message to take risks and push yourself out of your comfort zone. That seems to be the path to growth in artistry and life.
